![]() ❁ Geography ❁ Geographically, Moldova is a small, landlocked country in Eastern Europe that lies on the region Bessarabia with Romania bordering to the west and Ukraine bordering to the north, east, and south. Moldova's location near the Black Sea is what gives it the mild and sunny climate it has. The irregular terrain mixed with rain creates river silting and erosion. This nation also has very rich soil and because of this, it has become one of the most productive agricultural regions since ancient times. It lies mainly between two rivers; the Dniester and the Prut. ![]() ❁ Background ❁ Bessarabia had been part of the Principality of Moldavia which lasted from about 1346–1859. It was then ceded to the Russian Empire from the Ottomans and it pretty much stayed that way until uniting with Romania around 1918. After a good deal of WWII passed, Bessarabia was ceded into the Soviet Union from about 1940–1991. Moldova declared it's independence and became the Republic of Moldova. Moldova is now one of the poorer countries in Europe with a runaway region called Transnistria and strives to become a member of the EU. ![]() ❁ Culture ❁ The Moldovan culture has been heavily influenced by it's neighbors since it's at the crossroads of Latin, Slavic and other cultures, the most influential being Romania. A large majority of the ethnic group speaks Romanian and share the Romanian culture. Through the many years, the Principality of Moldavia and the region of Bessarabia was influenced by the churches put up by king Stephan the Great in the 15th century and by the works of the later renaissance Metropolitans Varlaam and Dosoftei. But in the second part of the 20th century, Moldova saw a massive Soviet immigration, which brought with it many elements of Soviet culture. A couple main parts to Moldovan culture is cuisine and music. Moldovan cuisine is extremely similar to Romania's and has been influenced by elements of Russian, Turkish, and Ukrainian cuisine as well. Main dishes include beef, pork, potatoes, cabbage, and a variety of cereals. Popular alcoholic beverages are divin (Moldovan brandy), beer, and local wine. Music is a large part of Moldova's culture. Among Moldova's most prominent composers are Gavriil Musicescu, ștefan Neaga and Eugen Doga. Among most prominent classical musicians in Moldova are Mark Pester, a distinguished violinist, conductor and the first professor of the State Conservatory. Moldova has been participating in the Eurovision song contest since about 2005. Their 2010 entry with the song "Run away" features a major internet meme "Epic sax guy" who is Sergey Stepanov, the band saxophonist. Numa numa also comes from Moldova. Music seems to be one of this country's prominent features. ![]() .:WIP WIP WIP:. English translation A treasure is our language that surges From deep shadows of the past, Chain of precious stones that scattered All over our ancient land. A burning flame is our language Amidst a people waking From a deathly sleep, no warning, Like the brave man of the stories. Our language is the greenest leaf Of the everlasting forests, Gentle river Dniester's ripples Hiding starlight bright and shining. Our language is more than holy, Words of homilies of old Wept and sung perpetually In the homesteads of our folks. A treasure will spring up swiftly From deep shadows of the past, Chain of precious stones that scattered All over our ancient land. |
